Classmates Don Black To Honor Trayvon One Month After Shooting
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - One month ago today, Krop High School student Trayvon Martin was shot dead in a Sanford subdivision, less that a hundred yards from the home where he and his dad had been watching the All Star Game. This morning, hundreds of his classmates came to school wearing black to mark the day.
The silent protest was just one of a number of events across the nation marking Trayvon's death at the hands of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer who claims he shot the teen in self defense.
Last week, students walked out of 40 South Florida schools to show solidarity with calls for justice for Trayvon, but school officials and Trayvon's family asked them to stop the protests and stay in school.
The t-shirts worn Monday made the point in a subtle way.
15 year old Jeffrey Barnes is a freshman who wore a black Trayvon shirt showing the teen in a hoodie, the hooded sweatshirt Trayvon was wearing the night he was shot. The hoodie has become a symbol for his death.
"I want justice for Trayvon," Barnes told CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald. "It really symbolizes the injustice we have, not in America, but in certain places in America."
"It shows we haven't fully gone past that racial barrier."
