Broward, Miami Temps Dip Into 40s
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A strong cold front moved down the state and rapidly dropped temperatures and wind chills down into the 40's or lower in Broward and Miami-Dade County.
Broward County has declared a cold weather emergency for Saturday night and Sunday morning because of the front.
"Saturday will be a chilly night with lows dropping into the 40s in most areas by Sunday morning," said CBS4 meteorologist Jeff Berardelli. "Expect cold wind chills in the 30s in some areas."
A much colder air will be ushering into the area behind the cold front. Its is likely that temperatures could fall down to around the freezing mark by early Sunday morning. Therefore, a freeze warning remains in effect for Glades and Hendry Counties for late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
A freeze warning remains in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday morning for areas near Lake Okeechobee, according to CBS4 meteorologist Craig Setzer.
The front is not strong enough to bring the record cold seen at the end of 2010, when freeze warnings were set for much of South Florida, but Broward County issued its alert primarily because the low temperatures could be a problem for homeless people.
Broward officials will have shelters open for the homeless, with free transportation available at 6:30 Saturday night in a number of areas where the homeless gather.
Sunday will still be cool with highs only in the upper 60s despite lots of sun, said Berardelli. Temperatures will warm Monday and Tuesday ahead of the next strong cold front, which is expected by the middle of next week.
