Child Dead, Two Injured Trying To Cross Busy Naranja Street
NARANJA (CBS4) - A little boy is dead and police say his mother and brother were injured when a car hit the family.
Miami-Dade Police Det. Roy Rutland said the mom and her sons, ages 7 and 8, were trying to cross 137th Ave near 268th Street in Naranja when a car hit them.
The driver, who has not been identified, stopped. Police say the family was not in a crosswalk or at a light.
"It had to be a very hard impact," said Yvonne Wright who saw the crash. "My prayers go out to the family."
Curtis Nelson Jr. says he saw the crash and tried to help.
"The first boy jumped up and we ran out of the gate to get him then we saw the lady lying down and I ran to the lady. When we saw the other little baby, I left the lady because the other little baby he wasn't moving," said Nelson.
Police have not yet identified which child died. They said the mother and the other child were in stable condition.
Esperanza Trevino says her brother was driving the car.
"He's sad; he has a kid of his own he's eight," she said.
Det. Rutland told CBS4's Maggie Newland that the investigation is ongoing and it is unclear at this time whether the driver will face any charges
Some witnesses mentioned another car might have been involved. Police say they are looking into all possibilities.
