Wild, High-Speed Chase In Miami Gardens Ends With Man In Custody

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A wild high-speed chase that started on I-95 ended in Miami Gardens with one person in custody.
Authorities, at last check, had not released his identity but family identified the driver as 24-year-old Antonio Jackson. They told CBS4's Gary Nelson that Jackson told them he would not stop during the chase because he's black and worried police would kill him.
"As the mother talked to him, she said he was scared that the police might either shoot at him or beat him," said Alfonso Rivera, the driver's father.
"He called me and said, 'Mama the police chasin' me,'" explained Angela Jackson, Antonio's mother.
The Miami Gardens Police Department said they are investigating the discharge of an officer's firearm.
Chopper 4 was over the scene Monday as authorities chased a 2016 white Chrysler starting on I-95 near 79th Street around 12:15 p.m.
From there, the driver made his way to Florida's Turnpike, northbound just North of the Golden Glades and later getting off minutes later near the Miami Dolphins' stadium. Moments later, the car slammed through the gates of the stadium property.
Eventually, he made his way through a residential area - driving through the sidewalk, barely missing other vehicles and even driving against traffic a number of times.
Miami-Dade Police chopper could be seen hovering over the car that was reportedly a rental vehicle.
The chase ended just before 12:45 p.m., after hitting a police officer's car near 183rd Street and NE 5th Court. The driver threw himself out of the vehicle seconds later and authorities stormed in to arrest him.
"I'm happy that they didn't hurt him or none of that. I don't know what happened, all I'm concerned is he's fine, and they didn't get to hurt him," Angela Jackson said. "I'm glad it ended the way it did. I don't want to bury a child. They could've killed him, beat him, whatever. Y'all see what's going on. He's a black."
Miami-Dade Police said the chase started earlier at 191th Street and NW 27th Avenue. The man reportedly threatened someone he knew on a metro bus and somehow made his way into a rental vehicle to get away prompting the chase. Police confirmed the man was the only one inside the car during the chase.
