Charity Toy Run Gets New I-95 North Route
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Drivers in Broward on Interstate 95 north or I-595 west can expect delays Sunday, December 11 as thousands of motorcyclists hit the road for the annual Christmas Toys in the Sun Run, but this year there's a change in the route.
More than 30, 000 bikers are expected to take part in the run, which starts this year at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach. Portions of the roads will be closed to commuters for approximately three hours.
No pre-registration is required for the parade, unless if you are a VIP rider. Gates at Mardi Gras open at 6:30 a.m., but the procession will depart at 9:45 a.m.
Motorcyclist will head west on Pembroke Road and make their way to Interstate 95 north to west on Interstate 595, exiting Flamingo Road and continue west on State Road 84 to Markham Park in Sunrise.
The roads should reopen by 1:30 p.m.
Last year and for almost two decades, the event began at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek.
It is unlawful to stand or park on a limited access highway, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
At Markham Park, there will be live music, vendors and international food. The event cost is $10 and one unwrapped toy per person. Don't have an unwrapped toy? Entry will be $20.
Proceeds from the event go to the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood and James Jr. Fund, Inc. Donated toys are distributed to needy children in South Florida.
