Chad Johnson Released From Jail
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – In a little over a year, former NFL receiver Chad Johnson has gone from a member of the Miami Dolphins to having to bond out of jail in Broward County.
Johnson was taken into custody Monday morning during a court appearance after a judge decided he had violated his probation that stemmed from a domestic violence incident with his then-wife Evelyn Lozada in 2012.
The Broward Sheriff's Office issued an arrest warrant for the former football star last week after he allegedly failed to report to his probation officer three months in a row, as well as failure to enroll in a Batterers Intervention Program (B.I.P.)
"As far as the warrant, it caught me off guard," Johnson told the court Monday. "I was under the impression after seeing you (the judge) the last time that all I had to do was my classes based off the wording...That's what I did. I didn't do any of this on purpose. I did everything I was supposed to do, and that's all."
Johnson had been on probation since September 2012 after he cut a deal with prosecutors over charges he head-butted Lozada during an argument last August. Lozada reportedly found a receipt for a box of condoms and confronted Johnson about it.
Under terms of the original plea deal, Johnson pled no contest and was ordered to serve one year of probation, complete batters' intervention counseling and pay medical restitution.
Johnson posted a $1,000 bail and was released from jail a little after 4:30 p.m.
His case has another hearing scheduled for June 3.
