MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Millions watch Judge Judy Sheindlin every day, drawn to her toughness, humor and quite possibly the fear she strikes in those appearing in her court.

"Make yourself an interesting person. That's my message," said Sheindlin.

Away from the bench, she looks back fondly on her humble beginnings. Her younger self determined to go to law school, working her way up through the New York courts as a lawyer then later a family court judge.

She accomplished much of it alongside her husband who is also a judge.

"A working lady, who runs a family and takes care of a house. There wasn't a whole lot of money. Jerry and I were civil servants so we had a enough but there wasn't a lot extra," said Sheindlin.

Now her Judge Judy courtroom show holds a coveted spot. It's the top rated show on daytime television.

"I don't necessarily think I'm powerful, but the message is powerful," said Sheindlin.

While she may not label herself a powerhouse, those who have been on this journey with her will say it for her including her bailiff Petri Hawkins Byrd who stands stoically nearby in court on every case.

"I always knew that she had what it took to be a star on TV, even when we worked in family court back in New York," said Byrd.

Judge Judy's executive producer Randy Douthit said he also quickly found the key to the show's popularity.

"As an executive producer, it's basically getting out the way and letting her do her job," said Douthit.

Judge Judy prides herself on her common sense and being able to weed through the excuses to find the truth. It's worked for 19 seasons so why mess with success.

"You know you say every year what will be different this year and the answer is absolutely nothing except I probably got another wrinkle or two," said Sheindlin.
