CBS News Poll: Americans Unhappy Over Shutdown
WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) – As day three of the GOP-forced government shutdown began Thursday, more numbers from a new CBS News poll shows Americans are not pleased with the government shutdown.
According to the CBS News poll, 72 percent of Americans disapprove of the House GOP shutting down the government due to differences about the Affordable Care Act. Eighty-six percent of Democrats disapproved along with 76 percent of independents while 49 percent of Republicans disapproved of the government shutdown.
The poll found that despite what a person's view of the Affordable Care Act was, they opposed shutting down the government to try to stop it. Of those who disapproved of the ACA, 59 percent said the government should be kept open. Eighty-seven percent of those who approve of the ACA want the government kept open.
When it comes to who to blame on the government shutdown, 44 percent chose Congressional Republicans, while 35 percent chose President Barack Obama and Democrats. Seventeen percent said both groups were to blame.
Overall, majorities think President Obama, Democrats, and Congressional Republicans should compromise on the issues. However, Congressional Republicans have yet to offer any concessions to Democrats to push negotiations ahead.
Finally, the poll found that 51 percent believe the budget standoff will be resolved in the near future, but 42 percent said it will take a long time to get past the current impasse.
