Causeway Cannibal Had No Flesh In Stomach
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Thirty-one year old Rudy Eugene is now known around the world as the Miami Canninbal or the Cannibal on the Causeway after his horrific attack on Ronald Poppo, but new details from his autopsy have revealed another twist in the investigation.
Eugene was shot and killed by police as he ate chewed away at the face of Poppo. According to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald, the autopsy on Eugene found there was no human flesh in his stomach. The autopsy did reveal a number of undigested pills in his stomach, according to the Herald.
Eugene attacked Poppo on the MacArthur Causeway on May 26 after he had stripped off his clothes as he walked from Miami Beach towards the mainland. When police arrived, Eugene had torn off most of Poppo's flesh from his face.
CBS4's Jim DeFede first reported earlier this week that marijuana was in Eugene's system at the time of the attack. But, a more in-depth toxicology screen for any other possible drugs will take another couple of months to complete.
The Herald reported that it's unknown where the pills that were found in his stomach played a role in the violent outburst.
In addition to not finding any human flesh in Eugene's stomach, the autopsy report found human flesh lodged between Eugene's teeth, according to the Herald. Eugene was missing his two top front teeth at the time of the attack, but a set of gold teeth was found in the pants he took off while crossing the causeway.
Poppo remains at Jackson Memorial Hospital, but his condition has prevented him from telling Miami Police any details of the attack. Sources told the Herald Poppo has undergone some skin grafts to help repair his face, but none of the tissue that was torn off and found could be used.
CBS4 also reported this week that torn up pieces of a Bible was found scattered along the MacArthur Causeway. Eugene's friends and family said he was religious and read the Bible regularly. Police also found a Quran in Eugene's car.
