VANCOUVER (CBSMiami) – The U.S. women's national team ended a 16-year drought by beating the Japanese 5-2 in Sunday's World Cup final.
The ladies, in particular Carli Lloyd, wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard against Japan.
The U.S. struck first on a corner kick knocked in by Lloyd just three minutes into the game.
Lloyd added two more goals for the first hat-trick in a Women's World Cup final – a record she accomplished with less than 16 minutes into the contest.
One of those other goals was a looping kick from midfield that caught Japan's goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori out of position.
Japan scored on Yuki Ogimi's goal in the 27th minute. But even with an own goal by Julie Johnston in the 52nd, Japan was overpowered.
The Golden Ball inevitably went to Lloyd, whose performance helped the U.S. get sweet revenge on Japan who beat them in the finals four years ago.
This is the third title for the U.S., which is the most of any country in Women's World Cup history.
