Carjacking Suspect Captured, Faces Judge
MIAMI (CBS4) – A man accused of carjacking a father and his 2-year-old son faced a bond court judge Tuesday and was ordered held without bond.
Miami police say the incident unfolded July 17th at 697 N. Miami Avenue when a father and his 2-year-old son parked a 2007 Mercedes Benz at that address. The father was there to meet a friend.
As the father unbuckled his son from the car seat, he noticed a man walking toward him. Police say that the man pulled out a black gun and pointed it at the father and his car. Fearful the gunman would harm him or his son, the father complied with the gunman's demands.
Police identified the gunman as Leo Moss, 24. But at that moment, all the victim knew was that Moss wanted keys to his car, his wallet with $39 inside and his driver's license. To get what he wanted, Moss also pointed the gun at the 2-year-old boy and told the victim to get back into the car with his son.
He refused. As Moss was about to drive away in the Mercedes-Benz, the victim pulled out his cell phone and attempted to call 911. But Moss thwarted his efforts and demanded the father's cell phone. Moss then sped off. Hours later, police caught up with Moss who was with two other men in the car.
Police said the driver of the stolen car managed to elude them for a while. It was eventually found after it had into a building at NW 7th Avenue and 20th Street.
Police tried to pull him over, but Moss refused. That's when police opened fire. Police said one of the subjects suffered an injury to his leg, but it was not known if it was as a result of the shooting.
The three men tried to escape on foot but were caught after police set up a perimeter. The second suspect is a 16-year-old and CBS4 News is not naming him because he is a juvenile.
Moss was also charged with two counts of attempted murder against a law enforcement officer for attempting to drive toward the officers.
