DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) --  Two elderly pedestrians were killed late Wednesday night when they were struck by a car on North Ocean Drive in Deerfield Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Broward Sheriff's investigators believe a shoe in the middle of the roadway marks the spot of impact in a crash Wednesday evening in Deerfield Beach that killed two pedestrians in their 80's.

Near the scene of the accident there is a yellow sign alerting drivers of possible pedestrians crossing the road in the area.

Investigators said the driver of Lexus hit the man and woman and remained on scene.

Witness Howard Comstock said he was grilling when he heard a thud and saw the driver's reaction.

"He got out of the car and was absolutely hysterical," Comstock said.

Comstock said it's dark in the area -- the 600 block of North Ocean Drive. He said the situation was exacerbated because a street light is out.

He was also surprised that the elderly couple walked in an area where there is no sidewalk, only a small grass shoulder.

"Why they chose to walk into oncoming -- or into traffic -- ongoing traffic, that was just nuts," Comstock said.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says the female victim died on the scene and the man died after being rushed to Delray Medical Center. Investigators said it appears the driver may not have been at fault.

"It's possible that the location played a role in this incident," said BSO Spokesperson Gina Carter. "It is dark. There is no cross street here. It may have been difficult for the driver to see the couple as they crossed the road."

BSO has not released the identities of the victims or their relationship. They are still waiting to contact their families.
