Canes Pursuing Florida As Future Opponent
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Hurricanes versus Florida Gators matchup from this past weekend was one of the most entertaining in college football. But it was also the last game in the series due to conference realignment and scheduling issues.
But UM athletic director Blake James said that he wants to continue the series and will continue reaching out to the University of Florida and athletic director Jeremy Foley about continuing the series in future years.
Part of the problem is Florida may be going to a nine game Southeastern Conference schedule in a year or two and that would ratchet up the competition for the Gators. That would make any non-conference games need to be easier, rather than harder.
Plus, Florida already plays Florida State every year in a non-conference game. If UF added Miami and kept Florida State plus played a nine-game conference schedule, the school could play one other school for a guaranteed win.
It would give Florida a murderer's row of a schedule that would make getting to a bigger bowl game that much tougher if the school struggled in SEC play.
For UM, the question is where could the game be played? UM, and likely UF too, would like a neutral site game, but those don't really exist for the two schools in the Sunshine State.
UM said it will continue to pursue the game and fans of both schools hope that they will once again start up the fierce rivalry.
