Candlelight Vigil Held For Motorcyclist Killed In Crash
FT. LAUDERDALE — Family and friends of a man who died in a motorcycle accident in Ft. Lauderdale earlier this month held a candlelight vigil for him Wednesday evening.
The vigil for 29-year old Kevin Gilliam, Jr. was held at the corner of Broward Boulevard and NW 36th Avenue.
"This is where he last laid his head. We wanted everyone to light a candle and remember him," said Simone Hyman, Gilliam's sister.
Gilliam was killed November 10th when a car traveling westbound on Broward Boulevard turned into his lane at NW 36th Avenue. On impact, Gilliam was thrown from his bike. He was to Broward Health Medical Center where he died.
Gilliam was a member of the zero tolerance motorcycle group and several members showed up for the tribute.
"He was a well liked rider, who is gone far too soon," said Jay Dunbar.
The driver that fatally struck Gilliam remains at large.
"I wish the person would turn himself in because he was a son a and nephew how can someone do something like this and go away like that?" said Gilliam's aunt, Elena Hunt.
CBS4's Joan Murray learned Wednesday that police are making progress on the crash investigation and have identified a suspect.
"Where this happened was very populated and we have received many leads," said Detective Deanna Greenlaw, Ft. Lauderdale PD, adding. "That man knows who he is and he has to walk around with that burden until he comes forward and owns up to what he did."
Last week, Gilliam's family pleaded with the driver which hit him to do the right thing.
Gilliam's mother was devastated by her son's tragic death.
"Somebody just broke half my heart and took my son away," said Estelle Hyman said last week as the family pleaded with the driver which hit Gilliam to do the right thing.
Though his family was uneasy with his passion for motorcycles, they say Gilliam was a careful cyclist and always wore his helmet and protective gear.
A viewing will be held Friday evening at McWhite Funeral Home on Broward Boulevard starting at 5 pm on Friday.
His funeral will be held Saturday.
