NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are back to serious business after a night of humor in New York City.
They attended a Catholic charity dinner where they poked fun at each other and themselves, but not all the jokes were well received.
The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner was supposed to be a night of good natured humor, but it took on an awkward tone.
"Hillary is so corrupt she got kicked off the Watergate Commission. How corrupt do you have to be to get kicked off the Watergate Commission? Pretty corrupt," he said to loud boos and at least one call demanding he get off the stage.
"Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a '4,'" Clinton joked. "Maybe a '5' if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair."
Trump even poked a little fun at his wife.
"Michelle Obama gives a speech and everyone loves it, Melania gives the exact same speech and people get mad. I don't get it."
On the "Today" show, New York's cardinal revealed a softer moment between the two candidates.
"Mr. Trump turned to Hillary and said, 'You are a talented woman,' and she said, 'Whatever happens, we need to work together,'" Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
One day after the meal, it was back to the campaign.
Trump was in North Carolina, while Clinton spent time in Ohio, another battleground state.
In Florida, the polls open on Monday as the long campaign finally winds down.
