Cameron Wake Named AFC Defensive Player Of The Week
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins got their 2014 season off to a great start by beating the defending AFC East champion New England Patriots 33-20 on Sunday.
The Dolphins played a dominant second half, shutting out the Patriots while scoring 23 unanswered points.
Miami's defensive captain and locker room leader, Cameron Wake, had a huge game and his performance was recognized by the NFL.
The league announced on Wednesday that Wake has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2014 NFL season.
Wake finished the game with three tackles, two sacks, two quarterback hits and two forced fumbles that proved to be game-changing plays.
This marks the second time in as many seasons that Wake has been awarded this weekly honor. During the Dolphins Week 9 battle against the Cincinnati Bengals last season, Wake came away with five tackles and three sacks, the last of which coming in the most dramatic of fashions.
With the game in overtime, Wake sacked Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton in the endzone to give Miami a walk-off, two point victory.
The last time a member of the Miami Dolphins was named Player of the Week for the opening week of the season came in 2001 when linebacker Zach Thomas was honored for his performance against the Tennessee Titans.
