Call Him Coach Luke

MIAMI (CBSMiami/NSF) -- He was once as nasty as he wanted to be, but Luther Campbell, who gained fame as the front man of the notorious rap group 2 Live Crew, has received approval for a coaching certificate that will allow him to continue coaching high-school football in Miami.

The state Education Practices Commission last week issued an order that largely mirrors an administrative law judge's recommendation that Campbell receive the certificate.

The Department of Education in 2010 said it did not think Campbell was entitled to a certificate because of past criminal charges, but Campbell pursued an appeal.

Administrative Law Judge Robert Meale in May sided with Campbell, writing in part that the department failed to prove that Campbell "lacks good moral character."

Meale's recommendation and the Education Practices Commission's order include a series of conditions, such as imposing a five-year probationary period, requiring Campbell to notify the state if he becomes involved in the adult-entertainment industry and requiring that he take college-level course work in the area of ethics.

Campbell has long been involved in youth and high-school football in Miami.

In 2009, he started working as an assistant coach at Miami Central Senior High and later moved to coaching at Miami Northwestern under temporary approval issued by Miami-Dade County.
