Cain Reassessing 2012 Candidacy
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain rode his victory in a Florida straw poll to the top spot in the GOP 2012 presidential primary. But, Cain's fall may have been just as fast.
According to the National Review, Cain informed his staff Tuesday morning that he is reassessing whether he wants to remain in the race for the nomination. He told staffers that he'll make his final decision in the "next several days," according to the National Review.
Cain's success in the Sunshine State helped him quickly ascend to being the leader of the Republican field.
But, after multiple accusations of sexual harassment and a Monday report that he had a 13-year affair with an Atlanta woman; Cain's future has been cloudy at best.
Republicans initially circled the wagons around Cain when the first accusation of sexual harassment came forward. But, as more claims have been made, the GOP is beginning to distance themselves from Cain.
The other problem Cain has faced is multiple foreign-policy flubs. One of his most notorious foreign policy gaffe happened as he was being interviewed by a newspaper editorial board in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Cain's support has dropped some in recent weeks, but not fallen off a cliff as the allegations grew.
In the latest polling out of South Carolina, Cain still garners nearly 13 percent of the vote. Still, that's far behind Mitt Romney and the front-runner Newt Gingrich, who leads with 37.9 percent.
In Iowa, an InsiderAdvantage poll taken Monday gave Gingrich a commanding lead of 28 percent to Ron Paul's 13 percent and Mitt Romney's 11.5 percent.
Cain, who once led in Iowa, has fallen to fifth place, behind Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
