Search For Missing Woman's Remains Ends For The Day
MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) – The search of a wooded section of Miami Gardens for possible remains of a Hallandale Beach woman who disappeared more than a year ago has ended for the day.
Police cadaver dogs, which have a highly trained sense of smell, have been searching a wooded area in Miami Gardens since Monday looking for evidence and or Lynda Meier's remains.
The specially trained dogs repeatedly alerted to a ten-by-ten foot section of the vast field on Monday and Tuesday, and investigators spent Wednesday digging and sifting through the dirt in this small 'location of interest.' They also brought in a small excavator to help dig through the soil. At the end of Wednesday's search police said nothing of significance was found.
Hallandale Beach Police Chief Dwayne Flournoy said the search was much like an archeological dig.
"It is tedious process because basically we are digging and sifting that area and we'll probably be out here for a couple of days working in this particular area of that parcel," said Chief Flournoy.
No remains have been found so far.
The 40-year old Hallandale Beach woman disappeared more than a year ago. On June 4th she was seen on a fuzzy surveillance tape leaving her beach side condominium. A surveillance camera also captured her taking cash from an ATM. Her Cadillac Escalade was last seen going westbound on Hallandale Beach Boulevard from U.S. 1. The vehicle was found abandoned a week later in Opa-Locka.
The search is taking place in a 190-acre tract of private, fenced land near NW 207th Street and 41st Avenue. A small pond is contained on the property.
Police have questioned Antwan Kennedy, 27, and Dallas King, 29, about her disappearance. No charges have been filed, but Flournoy said the two men remain persons of interest. Kennedy is a longtime friend of Meier and talked with her on the phone before she vanished.
Police say King bought a cell phone and attempted to use Meier's debit and credit cards after her disappearance.
"We know that Ms. Meier never had a relationship with Mr. King and the only connection that she had with Mr. King was through Mr. Kennedy," said Chief Flournoy.
State corrections records show Kennedy is currently serving probation stemming from an aggravated assault with a weapon conviction, and King is in prison for life for an armed robbery with a deadly weapon conviction. Neither man has been charged in the Meier case.
