Bucs To Part Ways With Kellen Winslow, Jr.
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end, and former University of Miami standout, Kellen Winslow, Jr. revealed Monday morning the team has told him he will either be traded or released.
Winslow signed a 6-year, $36.1 million contract in 2009 that had paid him $20.1 million guaranteed. Winslow is due $3.3 million, $4.5 million, and $5.5 million, with no guarantees, according to Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post.
By cutting Winslow, the Bucs would save $4.8 million in salary cap space. The Bucs don't need the cap space, but head coach Greg Schiano doesn't believe that Winslow is the difference maker the team originally thought.
Winslow's career was derailed in Cleveland, but he's been a solid pass catching tight end in Tampa Bay and is just 29-years-old. Winslow averaged 73 catches and nearly 800 yards receiving per season with the Bucs.
With his ties to Miami, he could be an attractive option for the Dolphins if rookie Michael Egnew doesn't develop quickly enough as a seam threat. But, given Miami's tight cap space, Winslow is likely too expensive for the Dolphins to seriously consider.
