Bucs Bench Freeman, Promote Glennon To Starter
TAMPA (CBSMiami) – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been struggling to get anything going right on the field under head coach Greg Schiano. So, the former Rutgers coach has decided to move on from starting quarterback Josh Freeman to backup quarterback Mike Glennon, according to CBSSports.com.
Freeman, once seen as the quarterback of the future in Tampa, fell on tough times and this year has struggled to be involved with the team on and off the field. Through the first three games, Freeman has completed just 45.7 percent of his passes and has two touchdowns, three interceptions, and has been sacked seven times.
Freeman and Schiano haven't seen eye-to-eye since the former Rutgers head coach took over last year in Tampa. Schiano has rubbed a lot of players and fellow coaches the wrong way with his tactics.
Freeman was stripped of being a team captain this year in a controversial move amongst the team. Freeman also reportedly asked for a trade before next month's trade deadline. But, Freeman isn't likely to get a train out of Tampa this year.
The Tampa Bay quarterback has a base salary of $8.43 million this season and no team with a quarterback need is likely to spend that type of money plus give up other compensation to acquire a quarterback who has struggled this season.
Glennon is a third-round draft pick out of North Carolina State this year and will step in, presumably as Schiano's chosen quarterback for the future. Glennon will start this week, then get a bye week before returning to the field again.
The Bucs can get a read on Glennon for the rest of the season and then decide if they want to build around him or start over again in the 2014 NFL Draft.
The move by Tampa Bay leaves Matthew Stafford as the last starting quarterback from the Class of 2009 still starting on his original team.
