BSO Works To Get Uninsured Drivers Off The Road
TAMARAC (CBSMiami) - Dozens of deputies on motorcycles roared out of BSO headquarters Wednesday morning on a mission to get drivers who aren't following the law and end up costing each American family about $950 dollars a year.
"We, today, are trying to find those who are not doing their fair share, which is having insurance," explained Fred Burkhardt from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
Throughout the day, when deputies stopped someone, they called in the driver's insurance information to a room filled with insurance company representatives. They checked out the information to make sure the coverage was legit.
At a stop in Deerfield Beach, a driver was accused of speeding. When the deputies asked her for the insurance information, it didn't take long for them to realize something did not check out.
"That's a fake card," one deputy told investigators on the scene. "What you have is a fake card."
"The person that was insured on the vehicle insurance car is not legit," explained Deputy Steve Rossman on the scene. "It (the card) was made up, printed off a printer."
The only reason the driver was not arrested is because she borrowed the van. But deputies are not done looking into her situation.
Another car stopped by authorities, the driver, who's had insurance for years, said it's frustrating to know that one-in-four drivers are cruising around out there getting a free ride – at his expense.
"I've been in this country for almost 33 years," said insured driver Verny Jospeh. "I ain't never drive my car with no insurance in this country."
