BSO Trying To ID Man Killed In Dania Beach Accident

DANIA BEACH (CBS4) - The Broward Sheriff's Office is trying to identify a man who died after he stepped off a sidewalk into the path of an oncoming car in Dania Beach Saturday night.

The sheriff's office said the man bought a sandwich and copy of the New York Post around 10:30 p.m. When he went to cross Federal Highway near 13th Street he apparently didn't see the 2011 Buick Lacrosse bearing down on him. Its driver, 79-year old Bernard Kaufman from Brooklyn, New York, wasn't able to stop in time and struck him.   The man was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood where he died a short time later.

Kaufman remained on the scene until deputies arrived. While the accident is still under investigation, the sheriff's office said Kaufman did not appear to be impaired and hadn't been speeding.

Anyone who knows the identity of the man is asked to contact Det. Michael Wiley of BSO's Traffic Homicide Unit at (954) 321-4840 or call Crime Stoppers of Broward County at (954) 493-TIPS (8477).
