BSO: Deputy Finds $700,000 Worth Of Cocaine Floating In Ocean
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A routine patrol on the waters off Dania Beach Sunday took an unexpected turn when a BSO marine deputy found $700,000 worth of cocaine floating.
Deputy James "Brad" Lemieux, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office, came across a spotted burlap bag floating in the ocean a mile offshore around 11 a.m. between the Dania Beach Pier and the Port Everglades Inlet.
Due to the rectangular shape, the deputy initially thought it was a trunk, but with further investigation Lemieux found a bag stuffed with 25 individual packages which later tested positive for cocaine.
According to BSO, the approximately 25 kilos, each valued at about $28,000, were taken to BSO's Crime Lab and will be turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Lemieux serves as the BSO Marine Unit's manatee protection patrol deputy.
On May 15th, a similar case was discovered by a local fisherman, according to BSO, which floated to surface and ended up being seven bricks of what was suspected to be marijuana.
"If anyone comes across a suspicious package on the beach or floating in the water, you are encouraged to call 911," BSO Marine Patrol Unit Sgt. Joseph Capua said.
