POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) – A mangled bike sits in the road on North Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach.

It's evidence of a deadly collision between a cyclist and Broward Sheriff's deputy around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Mac Mackone was in the area and saw the response.

"Any time someone lose their life like that it's bad," he said.

The cyclist did not survive.

BSO investigators are trying to sort out the details.

CBS4's Carey Codd was told it appears the deputy and the cyclist were both heading northbound.

The deputy was responding to a report of an audible alarm. He did not have his lights and sirens on, and BSO said he didn't need to.

What caused the collision is unclear. Did the cyclist fall off the bike and into the path of deputy's SUV or was there an impact?

"Traffic homicide detectives are investigating, trying to determine exactly how it happened," said BSO spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright. "So far they have been able to talk to some witnesses as well as our deputy. It doesn't at this point to be that speed is a factor."

BSO has not released the identity of the victim or the deputy.

People who live and work in the area say the victim appears to be a well-liked man who often rode his bike here.

Coleman-Wright said the deputy was not harmed physically but was emotionally shaken.

"He was very upset and that is understandable," she said. "Our prayers go out to both families, all parties involved."
