BSO Arrest 2 Brothers After Multiple Break-Ins
DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4)- The Broward Sheriff's Office said a pair of brothers confessed to a crime spree Tuesday -- breaking into more than 30 cars in a four hour period from late Monday night into early Tuesday morning.
Detectives escorted the Cherry brothers -- Anthony and Andrew -- out of BSO's Deerfield Beach substation in handcuffs Tuesday afternoon. The pair said nothing to reporters as they were loaded into a waiting BSO cruiser and taken to jail.
The men will be charged initially with two counts of car burglary but BSO said more charges are coming.
The break in the case came from a neighbor who told detectives she saw the men breaking into a neighbor's GMC Sierra truck in the 900 block of SE 15 Court around midnight Tuesday.
The woman asked them what they were doing, according to BSO. Investigators said the men told her the GMC belonged to a friend. Then, the men took off running.
Detectives captured Andrew Cherry inside a perimeter that was set up, CBS4's Carey Codd reported. A short time later, they arrested his brother, Anthony, at the brothers' home. According to BSO, the brothers "confessed to their involvement with committing 20-30 vehicle burglaries in the same neighborhood."
Detectives said it's tough to catch these type of thieves but an alert neighbor caught them in the act.
"We got lucky this time the citizen came outside and saw the subject doing it and we were able to set up and catch them pretty quickly," said Detective Jonathan Brown.
Investigators said the Cherry brothers stole more than 75 electronic devices like GPS devices, cell phones, cameras, tools, bags and loose change. Detectives estimate the value of the stolen items to be several thousand dollars.
"Within 4 hours -- they were able to take that much out of unlocked vehicles," Brown said.
Detectives said the men -- each of whom has been arrested before -- committed the crimes to support their drug habits.
BSO urges residents to make sure you always lock your vehicles and do not leave valuables in your car.
Detectives are investigating to see if the Cherry brothers are connected to any other recent break-ins to cars or homes.
