BSO: Robber Held Up Store In Front Of 6 Year Old Girl
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Broward Sheriff's investigators say a bold criminal is off the streets but not before causing a frightening ordeal for a 6-year-old girl.
The child was at work with her mother, a cashier at the Kwik Stop convenience store on Northwest 27 Avenue near 8 Street near Fort Lauderdale on New Year's Eve.
Detectives say store surveillance video shows Calvin Baker entering the store that morning, casually selecting something to eat and drink then approaching the enclosed cashier area to ask a question.
BSO says Baker asked the cashier where the bathroom was but instead of going to the restroom, detectives say Baker walked behind the counter, confronted the cashier at knife point while her daughter watched.
"He walks right past that 6 year old girl and demands money from the clerk and threatens to kill her and then he leaves very quickly," said BSO Spokesperson Dani Moschella. "All while the six year old is watching."
Moschella said it was terrifying for that mother and child. The victim declined to speak on camera but said she's glad witnesses helped put Baker in jail.
Baker is being held at the Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach without bond. He is charged in the New Year's Eve case as well as warrants for violating probation.
Investigators say jail is a place Baker is familiar with. BSO says Baker is classified as a habitual offender. State prison records show Baker has been in and out of Florida prisons since 1988 on a variety of charges including robbery, grand theft auto and drug charges.
