Brush Fire Near Card Sound Road Controlled
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) - Continuing dry conditions helped the spread of a brush fire near Card Sound Road and US1 south of Florida City, but late Saturday afternoon, firefighters who worked all day on the blaze believed they had it mostly contained.
49 homes in the area were threatened, along with the iconic Last Chance saloon at the start of the "18 mile stretch". Even though smoke drifted over the neighborhoods for much of the day Saturday, firefighters from the Miami-Dade fire department played water over the brush, and the homes were never in serious danger.
10 of the 49 homes endangered were evacuated, but people were allowed to return as the potential danger lessened
The Division of Forestry said about 7 acres burned.
South Florida has been struggling with extremely dry conditions which make brushfires very easy to start, either by natural conditions like lightning or by man-made sparks.
