Broward To Consider $3M Emergency Fix To A1A
BROWARD COUNTY (CBSMiami) – After Hurricane Sandy lambasted Broward County beaches, a county commission is considering an emergency fix.
The Broward County Commission will consider the move at its Dec. 11 meeting, authorizing emergency money to fix beach erosion along A1A north of Sunrise Boulevard, the South Florida Business Journal reports.
The measure would apportion to approve $3 million for metal sheet pile installation and sand placement, to prevent further damage to A1A.
Commissioner Bertha Henry, who introduced the measure, said the county will seek to split the cost with the city of Fort Lauderdale and the Florida Department of Transportation.
The motion said FDOT has committed to installing the sheet pile and is seeking assistance with the sand placement since it is outside of its right-of-way.
High tide events over Thanksgiving week further eroded beaches already damaged from Sandy.
The worst damage was confined to a four-block area in Fort Lauderdale.
