Broward Schools Cancels Outdoor Activities
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The approach of Hurricane Sandy off our coast has led to a change of plans for some.
Broward County Public Schools announced Wednesday that all outdoor activities and events for Thursday and Friday have been canceled due to the potential for severe weather including heavy rain and gusty wind. However, all classes will continue on their normal schedules.
Another big event happening this weekend is the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show. The Marine Industries Association of South Florida, which puts on the show, said as of Wednesday everything would go on as planned.
"MIASF is monitoring the progress and projected path of Tropical Storm Sandy. We are receiving updates as they are released from the Captain of the Port Miami and the National Weather Service.
As with any tropical storm in this region, actual impact can change depending upon the actual trajectory of the storm center and the size of the overall storm as it clears Cuba/Haiti."

Far to the south, Key West officials and organizers of Fantasy Fest said the remainder of the annual 10-day festival will continue despite Sandy's projected path well east of the Keys.
"All scheduled events for the remainder of the festival are to continue as planned," said Linda O'Brien, Fantasy Fest's director. "We have been and will continue to work closely with local officials and the Key West National Weather Service office to ensure revelers are safe."
Hurricane Sandy could bring wind gusts of more than 50 mph from Thursday through Friday evening. We could also see waves as high as 8-10 feet at the coast and 20 feet offshore; these may result in beach erosion and coastal flooding.
A modified Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the state's eastern coastline from the Volusia/Brevard County Line to Ocean Reef; and for the Upper Keys from Ocean Reef to Craig Key and Florida Bay.
