Broward County Offers "Twitter Alert"
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Residents in Broward County are encouraged to sign up for "Twitter Alert" to receive emergency information.
The county is among the first organizations in Florida and the U.S. to participate in Twitter's new public safety service.
Subscribers can receive public safety warnings and evacuation instructions from credible organizations in real time on their Twitter feed, text or on a mobile device.
Alerts will be distinguished by an orange bell and the hashtag #Alert.

Other Florida organizations participating in the program include Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department and Florida Division of Emergency Management.
National participants include American Red Cross, the 10 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regions and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Participating organizations can only use the alerts for "warnings for imminent dangers, preventative instructions, evacuation directions, urgent safety alerts, information on access to essential resources, critical transit and utility outages, and crowd and misinformation management."
