Broward Beach Sweep Nets Two Tons Of Trash
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A sweep of Broward's beaches in September yielded more than two tons of trash.
More than 2,300 volunteers took part in the 26th Annual International Coastal Cleanup which was sponsored by Ocean Conservancy and coordinated by the county's Natural Resources Planning and Management department.
Volunteers hit beaches as far north as Deerfield Beach south to Hallandale Beach and collected more than 4,500 pounds of trash. Of the more than 72,000 individual pieces of trash collected, cigarette butts and smoking related accounted for the roughly half: 35,000 were removed from beaches and coastal areas. Other unusual items included tools, hair clips, a hair extension, mouth guard, iron, carburetor cover, boots and an oriental coin.
The International Coastal Cleanup, typically held on the third Saturday of September, has attracted nearly 9 million volunteers from 152 countries and locations, and volunteers have collected 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and oceans on just one day each year.
