Brazil National Held In Sex Assault Aboard Cruise Ship
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A 20-year Brazilian national is locked up in Broward's main jail after he allegedly sexually assaulted a teen age girl aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.
Luiz Scavone is charged with one count of lewd and lascivious acts on a minor. During an appearance in bond court Wednesday, circuit Judge John Hurley set bond at $10,000. Scavone, however, won't be going anywhere, any time soon since he was also placed on an immigration hold which is a no bond charge.
According to his arrest report, Scavone and a juvenile lured a 15-year old girl from a teen club called Fuel on the Allure of the Seas during a recent cruise. They reportedly took her to a room and both sexually assaulted her.
Judge Hurley said if the immigration hold is lifted, and Scavone is released on bond, he must be fitted with a GPS monitor. He will also have to surrender his passport and will not be allowed to leave the tri-county area. He is also barred from applying for a replacement passport.
Hurley cited the case of Boynton Beach police officer David Britto who fled to Brazil last July using a replacement passport after he was indicted on a drug charge. While the U.S. has had an extradition treaty with Brazil for decades, relatively recent constitutional amendments forbid Brazil from turning over nationals to other countries to face criminal charges.
