Boy Struck By 3 Vehicles In Oakland Park Dies
OAKLAND PARK (CBS4)- Four young boys were crossing a busy Oakland Park roadway Friday night when one of them was killed after being struck by three vehicles.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said that just after 7 p.m. two of the boys had already made it across the 3800 block of North Andrews Avenue when 11-year-old Augustine Delacruz began to cross the roadway. He was walking from east to west and was in the area of the median when a southbound pickup truck, driven by James Lyons, 49, struck Delacruz.
The boy fell backwards from the impact and into the northbound lanes of traffic, where he was struck by two passenger vehicles.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue units responded to the scene and pronounced Delacruz dead. The fourth child did not attempt to cross the road.
All drivers remained on scene and cooperated with Broward Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Investigators as they pieced together the details of the incident.
Police said Delacruz was not at a crosswalk.
This is the second pedestrian accident in the area in the past three days.
An adult male victim was struck and is still in the hospital after being struck just five blocks north of where the tragedy occurred.
BSO wants to remind drivers and pedestrians to always be mindful of their surroundings and to pay attention to the roadway. Pedestrians should always look both ways before crossing the street, should only cross at designated crosswalks and should wear light-colored clothing at night to be more visible to motorists.
