Boomer Esiason: Jets Should Cut Tim Tebow
NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – The New York Jets made a splash in the offseason by acquiring the services of former University of Florida legendary quarterback Tim Tebow. But just a week into training camp, a former NFL star quarterback is saying it's time for the Jets to cut Tebow.
"I'm just telling you right now, I would (cut him), and I'll tell you why I would," former Cincinnati Bengals and Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason said on his radio show on WFAN in New York. "It's not in any way, shape, or form – I think – benefitting this team."
Esiason isn't the first to say Tebow needs to be cut from a team. Ever since the unorthodox quarterback entered the NFL, he's faced a large swath of naysayers that proclaimed he'll never become an NFL quarterback.
Looking back to last season, Tebow wasn't even looking like he'd get a chance to play for the Denver Broncos based on a poor showing in training camp and practices. Then, Tebow rallied the Broncos to a playoff berth and a first-round upset of the always tough Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the Pittsburgh game, Tebow was 10-21 for 316 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He finished the game with a touchdown pass to Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas in overtime to clinch the victory.
In some ways, that is what drives some fans and many in the media crazy about Tebow. The passes aren't pretty, the stats are not outstanding, but somehow Tebow finds a way to lead his team to victory; unless he's facing Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Esiason also said the entire Tim Tebow experience is too much for most teams. The Jets are in an especially precarious position because of the locker room problems the team has had over the past 18 months. And Esiason has previously called for Tebow to be cut during his time as a Bronco.
"You can say whatever you want about Tebow," Esiason said Monday. "He played some of the worst football that any quarterback has ever played in the history of the game last year at times."
