FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A man charged in a deadly DUI crash in Lauderhill made his first appearance before a judge Friday morning.
Deshawn Prince, 24, was arrested Thursday on charges that include three counts of vehicular homicide, three counts of DUI causing death to any human and two counts of DUI with damage to a person or property.
During the hearing the judge set bond at more than half a million dollars.
The crash, which occurred on January 10th, claimed the lives of Shaquille Barrow and his 14-year brother Tyrese Legrand, along with their friend Nathaniel Morgan.
Witnesses told investigators that "the yellow Audi was traveling at a high rate of speed" when the driver, Prince, approached the intersection at Inverrary Boulevard and NW 44th Street. They said when he tried to make a left turn from the right turn lane, he went onto the shoulder, hit a tree, went through a fence and ended up in a pond on the Inverrary Country Club grounds.
Prince was able to free himself and swim to shore. Police dive team members pulled his passengers from the submerged car, all were unconscious and unresponsive. They were taken to area hospitals where they were pronounced dead.
The mother of Tyrese and Shaquille said Prince deserves to be punished.
"I lost a 14-year old, his brother, I have two grand-daughters without a father, I can't go into Tyrese's room," she said. "It hurts the whole family."
Prince reportedly admitted to police he was trying to follow another car when he tried to make the right turn on NW 44th Street but "was unable to due to excessive speed, lost control and went into the lake."
When investigators encountered Prince on scene "he had blood shot watery eyes, was slurring his speech, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person," according to a search warrant.
Police also wrote in the warrant that Prince said he a group of friends were at a Sunrise bowling alley prior to the crash. According to the warrant, Prince said he "bought a pitcher of beer with another friend who was bowling with them. Prince stated that he had two cups of beer and played one game of bowling before leaving."
Prince was reportedly headed to Barrow's home when the crash occurred.
