Boil Water Order Remains In Effect For Sunrise Water Customers

SUNRISE (CBS4) – A boil water order remains in effect for residents of Sunrise, Weston, Southwest Ranches, Davie, Indian Trace and Bonaventure who get their water from the City of Sunrise.

City officials issued the order after they were notified on Thursday that E.coli bacteria was found in a sample of tap-water.  By Friday a 'Code Red' phone calls started going out to all customers.

A spokesperson for the City of Sunrise said approximately 200,000 customers in the Sunrise Water Utility Service Area are affected

"This type of contamination is naturally occurring, in nature we have bacteria all over.  We have coliform and other fecal bacteria due to animals and humans," said Sunrise utilities director Tim Welch.

A notice sent by the city said the water system detected fecal indicators in one of the city's wells, and that well was removed from service. The notice said, "One assessment sample in our drinking water distribution system for the month of July was positive for coliform bacteria, but negative for E. coli. A trigger sample following the assessment sample in this well was positive for E. coli."

Sunrise City Manager Bruce Moeller said anyone in the affected area should take precautions.

"Any water used for cooking or ingestion should be boiled for one minute first," said Moeller.

It is also recommended to use bottled water as well, including when "drinking, making ice, preparing food, and washing dishes until further notice," according to the order.

If the water is not boiled the organisms can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, cramps, and associated headaches.
