FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – There is a precautionary boil water order for parts of Fort Lauderdale following a water main leak that flooding Sunrise Boulevard on Christmas Day.

The boil water notice is for people who live in the following boundaries:

  • West: NE 17th Way
  • South: NE 9th Street and NE 9th Place
  • East: Middle River
  • North: NE 11th Street

People who live within these boundaries are being advised that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes be boiled.  A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient.  As an alternative, bottled water may be used.

The boil water notice will remain in effect until repairs are made to the water main break and a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.

Crews have worked all night to fix the leak which started Friday when water gushed out of a crater which measured 20x20 feet on westbound Sunrise Boulevard between 19th and 20th Avenues near the Gateway Theater.

Crews finally gained control of the valves Friday night so they could pump the floodwaters and the crater.

The busted line affected several nearby mom & pop restaurants open for the Christmas crowd, which forced them to close early.
