Boil Water Notice Extended For Parts Of Broward

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – The Precautionary Boil Water Notice for parts of Broward County has been extended until at least Saturday, June 15th.

The advisory was issued Wednesday after a sample from the South Broward Regional Well Field tested positive for E. coli.

The City of Hollywood receives a portion of its water from this well field so the boil water notice is for all customers served by its public utilities system. This notice also impacts the cities of Davie, Dania Beach and Hallandale Beach, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and sections of Broward County.

The boil water notice does not affect residents within City of Miramar's Utilities Service Area.  It only affects the area serviced by Broward County that is bounded by Pembroke Road to the north, SR7 (441) to the east, SW 25 Street to the south, and Turnpike to the west.

Hollywood officials said all water received from the South Broward Regional Well Field undergoes disinfection and treatment before being distributed through their water system. Samples tested at the city's water treatment plant have not shown any contamination.

"It's safe," said Terry Karda from Broward Water and Waste Water Services.  "The drinking water in the distribution system is safe to drink."

Broward Health Emergency Medicine Director Dr. Nabil El Sanadi said the concern is for people who have weakened immune systems.  He says while this type of E. coli is not usually fatal, it can make someone very uncomfortable.

"If you develop serious signs and symptoms, abdominal cramps, fever diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, severe watery stools, every time you eat or drink something it goes right thru you, definitley seek medical attention," he suggested.

Those who live in the impacted zones and don't want to bother with bottled water should bring their tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and then let it cool.  Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

The affected Broward County well has now been disconnected from the system, but to meet regulatory requirements all of the impacted utility systems must continue to sample and have two days of consecutive satisfactory results for the Boil Water Notice to be lifted.
