Body In Street After Stabbing In Miramar
MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) - Miramar Police are still trying to sort out the details of a grisly crime that left a woman dead in the middle of a residential street.
Family members of 38-year-old Shuneeque Jones were overcome with grief.
Her uncle, Jerome Jones, tells us she was the loving mother of two sons and engaged to be married.
"It's a tragedy and it hurts," Jones said.
Police say they received multiple 911 calls reporting a woman being attacked on Sabal Palm Drive near Miramar Parkway and University Drive around 4:30 Monday afternoon. Police say it appears Jones was stabbed to death.
Dozens of Miramar Police officers -- and officers from neighboring jurisdictions -- searched for the killer. Streets were blocked off, a Broward Sheriff's Office helicopter circled overhead and heavily armed officers roamed the neighborhood, checking backyards with police dogs.
"I'm scared," said Wesly Shia. "I'm terrified. My heart is racing."
After a nearly 2-hour search police say they took the killer into custody. He has not been identified.
Neighbors watched the drama unfold, wondering how such violence could occur on their streets.
"It's a safe neighborhood," said Diane Forte. "It shouldn't have happened here."
The news of a killer on the loose left people concerned for their safety. There was much relief when police said they found him.
"I feel a whole lot better now that they got him in custody," said neighbor Sherman Mungin. "I'm gonna be sleeping a whole lot better.
Judging from the outpouring of sadness it will be awhile before the family of Shuneeque Jones will be able to sleep well. They have innumerable questions about why her life ended in such a public and violent way.
Police tell us they are still not clear whether the victim and her attacker knew each other. Police said they do not have a motive for the killing.
