"Boat" Competition Brings Laughs In Key West
KEY WEST (CBSMiami.com) – Seaworthiness was not the primary goal of Key West's Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta Sunday. It was all about fun as nearly 40 teams tried to make plywood-and-duct tape "boats" afloat.
The boats were built out of a four-by-eight foot sheet of plywood, 2 eight-foot two-by-fours, a roll of duct tape, a pound of fasteners and epoxy paint.
The course becomes "sink or swim" for most of those who decided to test their boat building skills and pilot their vessel in the competition.
Among the boats were a parrot figurehead vessel, a banana-shaped gondola, and a vessel that looked like a giant wine bottle.
Prizes were given away for fastest boat, creative design, paint job, and the "sinker" award given to the least seaworthy vessel in the field.
