Bizarre Week In South Florida Sports
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Legendary former Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi once famously said, "What the hell's going on out there?" That sentiment, spoken decades ago, summarizes what many fans may be thinking after a week of strange sports stories in South Florida.
Everything started on Sunday when Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey was ambushed outside of the locker room in New England. He was met by Massachusetts Police who gave the star center a grand jury subpoena to appear and answer questions.
The NFL and the Dolphins knew nothing about the serving of the subpoena which is related to Pouncey's friend Aaron Hernandez's murder and weapons trial. Pouncey and the Dolphins have refused to comment about the subpoena or his relationship with Hernandez.
Then Wednesday afternoon word first got out that Florida Atlantic University head coach Carl Pelini abruptly resigned his job. It was soon reported that his defensive coordinator also resigned and both were escorted off campus by police.
The details that followed at a Wednesday afternoon press conference revealed that both Pelini and his defensive coordinator resigned after they were confronted by the school's athletic director about illegal drug use.
Pelini admitted to making bad decisions and both coaches resigned instead of being terminated.
Later Wednesday evening, reports emerged that Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin had been AWOL from the team since having a practical joke played on him by teammates on Monday. Reports from NFL.com and Jay Glazer of FoxSports said Martin had suffered an emotional breakdown and was seeking help.
The Dolphins, as is standard operating procedure, refused to comment or even acknowledge the story about Martin. The Fins have simply listed Martin as "doubtful" for Thursday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, even though he reportedly hasn't been seen by the team since Monday.
And then to top it all off, the defending NBA champion Miami Heat went to Philadelphia to play the 76ers Wednesday night and were summarily run off the court at times by the team most NBA experts believe will be the worst team in the NBA in 2013-2014.
After that type of week, fans should probably be ready for anything when the Dolphins take the field on Halloween Night to play the Bengals.
