Bikram Yoga Sizzling In Miami
MIAMI (CBS4) -- Yoga helps relax and ease the tension through resistance mixed with stretching exercises but if you want a really "hot body"; there's Bikram yoga, a steamy take on the yoga tradition of mind, body and spirit.
So if doing yoga in an extremely hot room filled with sweaty bodies is your kind of workout, than the new Bikram Brickell Hot Yoga Studio is for you.
Spanish music star Nacho Cano, recently opened his new venture with the help of yoga guru Bikram Choudhury.
Bikram yoga is doing stretching and core strength exercises in a room heated up to 105 degrees. Paired with traditional yoga stances and postures, participants go from glistening to gushing as they sweat out those bodily toxins that many of us probably prefer to leave in place in air conditioned comfort.
But the scorching temperature is why the 90-minute Bikram class is warmly referred to as "hot yoga." The guru insists the furnace-like heat is necessary.
"If you take a piece of steel to a blacksmith and tell him can you make a knife, what's the first thing he's going to do? Put it in the fire. Heat it up," explained Guru Bikram.
"The heat's meant to loosen up your muscle so you can really stretch, you can open, you can do a lot more in a hot room than you can in a cold room,' said Bikram yoga instructor Raquel Palayo.
Cano says it's not only good for you physically, but mentally as well.
"And that's one of the good things of this, is you prove you're stronger than you think," said Cano.
In the master class, led by Bikram, the guru's followers don't sweat the small stuff. They're convinced the benefits of melting outweigh any safety concerns like not being able to breathe.
"You get used to it," said Palayo. "Your body starts to crave it."
