More E-Mails Compromised In Data Breach
MIAMI (CBS4) - Best Buy and Walgreens are the latest companies to acknowledge their accounts have been hit by hackers.
Over the weekend a string of companies including Chase Bank, Capital One Financial and Tivo alerted customers that their personal information may have been compromised after a cyber attack on the marketing firm Epsilon which handles e-mail marketing for them.
It's believed the hackers only got the names and email addresses on Epsilon's servers, and not more sensitive information like credit card or social security numbers.
Time magazine compiled a list of the companies that had user data compromised which include:
- AbeBooks
- Ameriprise Financial
- Barclays Bank of Delaware
- Best Buy
- Brookstone
- Capital One Financial
- Citigroup
- The College Board
- Disney Destinations
- Home Shopping Network
- JPMorgan Chase
- Kroger
- L.L. Bean
- Marriott Rewards
- McKinsey & Company
- New York & Company
- Ritz-Carlton Rewards
- TiVo
- U.S. Bank
- Walgreens
Disney mailed out emails on Sunday warning customers of the security breach.
"We regret that this incident has occurred and any inconvenience this incident may cause you," Disney wrote in an email to affected customers. "As a result, you should be extremely cautious before opening links or attachments from unknown third parties or providing a credit card number or other sensitive information in response to any email."
Each year, Epsilon sends out 40 billion emails and released a statement on March 30th saying it had detected "clients' customer data were exposed by an unauthorized entry into Epsilon's email system." The company, which has approximately 25-hundred clients, said only about two percent of them were affected.
The companies affected have warned their customers to be on the look out for 'phishing' scam emails which purport to be from them but in reality a way for hackers to steal private information like account numbers or passwords.
