Beckham Group One Step Closer To Miami Soccer Stadium

LITTLE HAVANA (CBSMiami) -- The finishing touches on a deal to build a soccer stadium in Little Havana may have been agreed upon in South Beach Thursday night.
David Beckham and the Superintendent of Miami-Dade Schools, Alberto Carvalho, met for dinner at the SoHo Beach House to discuss stadium development on a piece of property owned by the Miami-Dade School Board.
The school board is expected to vote on the project sometime before or after Thanksgiving Day.
Under the deal, the Beckham Group would finance the stadium with private money and pay above market value for the surrounding land. The school board would be given access to the stadium for their own events like football games and graduations. The Beckham Group would also pay the property taxes on the land and an annual maintenance fee of $500,000.
The proposal stands to be a win-win for everyone, especially a school system who was cut out of previous stadium negotiations for the AA Arena and Marlins Park.
The deal is still a ways off from being completed, however, including a few property owners near Marlins Park that are holding out.
Beckham and his partners have one more scheduled meeting this year with the city commission.
