Beckham Announces Soccer Stadium Deal In Overtown

OVERTOWN (CBSMiami) -- David Beckham has scored a new site to build his soccer stadium in Miami.
Friday, Beckham announced that his group of investors have secured the area at 650 N.W. 8th Street in the historic Overtown district, according to CBS news partner The Miami Herald.
Miami Beckham United plan to build on about 9 acres of private and County-controlled land, a mostly vacant piece of property, within walking distance of public transport and the new Miami River District. The group said they will purchase the County land at market value, once Major League Soccer approves of the location.
Mayor of Miami Carlos Giminez released a statement Friday, confirming the move:
"Thursday evening, I signed a non-binding Letter of Intent with Miami Beckham United. The document confirms the group's intention to negotiate the purchasing of land owned by Miami-Dade County, located on N.W. 6th Street and N.W. 6th Avenue near downtown Miami. Miami Beckham United would pay fair market value for the property that is currently managed by the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department. The purchase is part of Miami Beckham United's effort to assemble land to eventually construct a privately-financed, privately-owned Major League Soccer stadium in the urban core of our world-class community."
After several failed attempts to build in other parts of the city, the Beckham group thought they were close to a deal for land owned by the Miami-Dade School Board in Little Havana.
Although that deal fell through like previous attempts, those close to the Beckham group said they still plan to offer the school system an opportunity to use the stadium for school-related sports and events, The Miami Herald said.
