MICANOPY, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — For the second time over the past 8 days in north Florida, a black bear was killed after being struck by two cars.
No people were injured in the collision near Micanopy on Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash occurred when a bear crossed into the path of a BMW traveling south on Interstate 75 at about 11:45 p.m.
Authorities estimate the bear weighed between 400-500 pounds. The bear continued walking after being struck and was hit by another vehicle on the other side.
On May 3, an even larger bear was killed by an SUV in a collision that left one person seriously injured.
State wildlife officials say there are more than 3,000 black bears in Florida
