Beams Collapse At FLL Construction Site, One Injured
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Construction at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International airport turned dangerous when several 125-foot structural beams collapsed.
A worker suffered a superficial injury to his hand and was treated at the scene according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse. "A report will be sent to OSHA since there weren't any injuries just damage," said Allan Siegel with the Broward County Aviation Department.
According to Siegel, five beams collapsed just before 2 p.m. Saturday within the construction site at Griffin Road and Federal Highway.
"The beams form the deck of the runway and the roof of the structure," said Siegel.
Roadway traffic has not been affected by the incident but it did stop the freight trains that travel on the FEC railroad tracks. Saturday evening crews were working to remove the beams, so trains could resume travel.
The incident has not pushed back the September 2014 deadline to complete the $791 million project according to Siegel.
