Baylor QB RG3 Declares For NFL Draft
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins are in desperate need for a quarterback in the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft. Now, the Fins may have a shot at getting that desperately needed "franchise quarterback."
According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Heisman Trophy winning Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III will turn pro and enter the 2012 NFL Draft.
That's the good news for the Miami Dolphins.
The bad news is that the Dolphins have the eighth or ninth pick in the draft and if the Fins stay put, Griffin will be long gone by the time the Fins are on the clock.
It's easy to see why the Dolphins would be very interested in selecting RGIII. In his collegiate career, he completed 67 percent of his passes for 10,366 yards, 78 touchdowns and just 17 interceptions.
He also ran for another 2,254 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground.
Griffin has natural gifts that every team would love to have at the quarterback position.
He stands 6'2" and weighs 220 pounds is a former Olympic hopeful hurdler, who just so happens to have a strong arm and can keep plays going long after the protection breaks down.
But, for the Dolphins to acquire Griffin, they will have to give up at least two first round picks and more.
During the last draft, the Atlanta Falcons gave the Browns first, second, and fourth round picks plus this year's first and fourth round picks to jump from 27th in the draft to 6th.
When it comes to quarterbacks, the price was steep. In order to acquire Carson Palmer, the Raiders traded away a 2012 first round pick and a conditional second round pick in 2013 that could become another first round pick depending on Palmer's performance.
It may cost the Dolphins at least two first-round draft picks, plus one or two second round picks to trade up with the St. Louis Rams to the number two overall pick to acquire Griffin.
The Rams now are in the driver's seat and can choose to auction the pick to the highest bidder or simply pick the best available player.
