ORLANDO, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — The attorney who sued Florida A&M University over the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion is no longer allowed to practice in Florida.
Florida Bar spokeswoman Karen Kirksey told local media that Christopher Chestnut was declared "ineligible" in June for not having taken 30 hours of continuing legal-education classes over the past three years.
Chestnut's spokesman, Josey Crews, told the Gainesville Sun that the Bar may have made a clerical error and says Chestnut has taken 37 hours of education.
Chestnut, lead counsel for the drum major's estate and for Champion's parents, also has been accused by the Bar of improperly soliciting clients, misrepresenting facts and charging excessive fees. Champion was from Decatur, Georgia.
The Bar trial on those matters is set for Aug. 24th.
Chestnut did not respond to the Orlando Sentinel's request for comment on the Bar's accusations.
